3 Perfect Ingredients
Although coconut oil may dry out the skin, it is excellent for use in body butter. Its light texture ensures that the butter melts quickly upon contact with the skin. Moreover, coconut oil is valued for its antibacterial and anti-fungal qualities. It also excels at sealing in moisture and deeply penetrating the skin’slayers.
Cocoa butter is the most solid oil in this mixture, and I always opt for the natural, unrefined variety. Its divine chocolate aroma is a sure sign yyou’vechosen correctly. Besides its heavenly scent, cocoa butter offers incredible benefits for the skin. IIt’srich in antioxidants and healthy fats, aiding in the healing of rashes, aging signs, and dryness. Its efficacy in treating stretch marks and blemishes makes it an ideal ingredient for homemade body butter.
Jojoba oil, the liquid wax in this blend, is an excellent natural moisturizer that quickly penetrates and forms a protective barrier on the skin. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it practical for various skin conditions. Although essential oils can enhance body butters, this fragrance is delightful. I prefer to omit crucial oils, making it suitable for everyone, from my infant son to my elderly grandmother.
DIY Body Butter Recipe
Ingredients
4 ounces coconut oil
3.5 ounces cocoa butter
2 ounces jojoba oil
Instructions
- Begin making your DIY body butter by measuring the oils using a digital kitchen scale.
- Add to a heat-safe container. (I use the stainless bowl from my stand mixer.)
- Melt oils over a double boiler. (I place the stainless bowl of my stand mixer into a medium saucepan of boiling water.)
- When the oils are melted, stir well, then place them in the refrigerator to set them up slightly. (You’ll notice a slight film on the top and sides of your container as the oils begin to harden. This usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the temperature the oils reach when melting.)
- When the DIY body butter oils are still liquid but starting to harden, begin to mix them in a stand mixer. (You can use a mixer as well, but it takes A LOT of time, so you’ll need to plan on mixing for a while).
- You will see the oils move from a darker yellow to a pale yellow and finally to a frothy white. Keep mixing the oils until they become light and fluffy. This can take from 20 minutes to an hour and a half! (Be patient; it’s worth the wait!)
- If the oils seem to be staying liquid forever, put them back in the fridge to harden up. If your home is warm, this process can take quite some time. I always notice it takes longer in the summer.
- Once the oils seem to be light and fluffy, transfer them to a glass mason jar or another type of reusable container. Place in the fridge to fully harden.
